A2, Describe the place where you live

Dear students, have a look at some interesting descriptions that your classmates have written. Most of you wrote it very beautifully too. Enjoy your reading.

The place where I live.
I’m living in León which is an old city placed between two rivers : Bernesga and Torio. It’s surrounded by orchards, farms and meadows with a lot of trees .It’s in the North of Spain and has a Roman origin in the 1st Century before Christ. León is the main city of the province and it has a population of about 140.000 people.

It’s a lovely city full of sights and it’s great for walking  around. There are two different  cities in León.On the one hand ,  the new city with wide streets with a lot of shops , parks , avenues and pubs , like Ordoño II street or La Condesa  or La Calle Ancha , where people  go shopping  or meet  friends for walking  or drinking coffee or a beer in sunny days .On the other hand, the old city, with narrow streets and a lot of outdoor pubs and typical restaurants where people meet for having  tapas, and drinking wine and beer.

The weather in León is very different from Levante or Andalucia. The winter is cold  and the summer is very hot , but  I love it because there are a lot of sunny days and it’s unusual to find  foggy or cloudy days. Spring and autumn have mild temperature  and days, they are usually bright .

León is famous for its Gothical Cathedral, although there are a lot of wonderful seesights like San Marcos or Botines or San Isidoro, but the most famous place is the Cathedral with its white stone towers rising towards heaven like a prayer of León’s people .It’s very  famous  too  for typical food : blood sausage, smoked meat, sausages and a variety of delicious cheese and wine.

The biggest attraction of León is probably the Easter Processions ,including Genarin’s  Procession. We also enjoy  San Juán’s  Festival in the summer  , with a lot of fireworks and floats parade ,live music in the street and the famous San Juan’s  Bonfire where people throw bad luck and problems to burn them . People, those days, are in the streets with friends or family .

The atmosphere of León is ideal for me. People are quite friendly , the city is very safe and  quiet , and women are the prettiest in  Spain .  All  that makes the main reason why  I like living here.

I live in Maracaibo, which is a city in the northwestern part of Venezuela. It has a population of 1.459,448 people and it´s the second biggest city in Venezuela.

It´s a beautiful city, but it sometimes can be busy. In the centre of town there are a lot of street markets and there are also many people buying and selling, there are some churches and there is a colonial area and very picturesque called El Saladillo, where you can have coconut water.

The weather here is sunny almost all the year, and the city is known as “The Beloved Land of the Sun” the hot weather  sometimes is unbearable and there are  only two periods per year.

Maracaibo is famous for its lake, its huge bridge and also for its square and monument in honor to the patron saint of the province “The Virgin of the Chiquinquirá”. The biggest tourist attraction in Maracaibo is probably the Basilica of Our Lady of Chiquinquirá.

There´s a festival in November called fair Chinita, with a Gaita Concert, which is typical Christmas music in the streets at night, there are many people in the streets dancing, singing and drinking and also there are a lot of fireworks.

But I think the best things about Maracaibo are the people and the gastronomy (I like eating Patacón, which is a typical dish) and the people are very friendly and extrovert and that´s the main reason why I like living here so much.

THE PLACE
WHERE I LIVE
(By FRANCISCO JAVIER PALOMO)

I live in León, a city in the Northwest of Spain. It has a population of about 131.000 people.

It’s a beautiful, ancient and modern at the same time, city. There’s an Old León, with a lot of narrow streets, churches, small markets… Here there´s an area called “El Barrio Húmedo” where there are a lot of bars, clubs and restaurants. There´s also a New León, where we can find wide streets, modern buildings, beautiful gardens and shopping centres.

The weather is quite pleasant. The summer is usually sunny, although not very hot, so it´s great for walking around the city. Spring and autumn are usually rainy and windy, but not too much .The winter can be cold and it usually snows – sky lovers can go to the nearby mountains and practise their favourite sport.

The biggest tourist attractions in León are probably its beautiful Gothic Cathedral and the “Hostal de San Marcos”. León is also famous because it is an important city in the “Camino de Santiago”- every year a lot of pilgrims from all over the world visit our city. On the 24th of June, “Las Fiestas de San Juan” take place, a festival with live music, theatres and traditional markets in the streets. At night, there are fireworks and a big bonfire. After that, young people go to “El Húmedo” to have a drink and to eat typical “tapas”

I think the best things about León are its people and its atmosphere. I enjoy walking around this small, quiet and safe city, and talking to its friendly people. I’m from Madrid but I love living in León.

THE PLACE WHERE I LIVE
I live in León. It’s a small city situated in the north-west of Spain. It has a population of 130,000 people. In León nothing is too far, so you can go from place to place on foot.
In my opinion, León is the most beautiful city in the world. There are a lot of old monuments because it has its origins in the Roman Age. The most popular monument is “The Cathedral”, which has beautiful stained glass windows. There’s an area called “El Húmedo” where there are a lot of bars and restaurants and people go to have a drink after work or at weekends. And the best of all is that you can eat for a small amount of money because “the tapa” (a small snack) is free with every beverage ordered.
The weather here is very particular and quite different from the south of Spain. It changes a lot during the year. Normally we have a long, cold and wet winter and a short and dry but not always hot summer. Spring and Autumn are practically non-existent (They are very short). This is the reason why there is an old saying according to which in León there are only two seasons: winter and railway (station).
León is famous for many things: the pilgrimage to Santiago, the Cathedral, the Húmedo Area, St Isidoro’s Basilica, St Marcos’sParador, MUSAC (Museum of Contemporary Art)but the biggest tourist attraction is probably Easter. During the Holy Week there are a lot of wonderful processions and it’s a feast declared of International Tourist Interest. But at Easter, there is also a famous pagan feast: “Genarín”, and many people from all over Spain come to celebrate it.
But I think the best thing about León is the people. At first, they may seem shy and quiet but when you get to know them, they are good and friendly hosts. In fact, if you have a friend from León he’s for life.
