STARTER

  1. Look at the pictures. What is the message about gender roles?

  2. Read the statements in the quiz. Do you agree (✓) or disagree (✗)? Compare answers with a partner. Can you identify which gender-typical traits are being referred to in each one?

  3.  Listen to a young couple checking their answers, and check yours. How typical are they? How typical are you? Do you agree with the answers?

GENDER ROLES AND EQUALITY IN TODAY’S SOCIETY

1️⃣ Work and Professional Life

  • Are some jobs still associated mainly with men or women? Why do you think this is?

  • Do men and women have equal opportunities in the workplace in your country?

  • Are there differences between having a male or female boss? Why might people think so?

  • What progress has been made in gender equality at work? What still needs improvement?


2️⃣ Society and Social Expectations

  • How have gender roles changed in your country in the last 50–100 years?

  • Do you think attitudes towards gender are improving in your country? And globally?

  • In what areas of life have men and women achieved greater equality?

  • What stereotypes about men and women still exist today?


3️⃣ Education and Upbringing

  • Should boys and girls be treated differently while growing up? Why / Why not?

  • Do toys, school subjects, or discipline methods reinforce gender roles?

  • Do you think single-sex schools influence gender identity or equality?


4️⃣ Language and Behaviour

  • Can you think of examples of sexist language or behaviour?

  • How should people respond to sexist attitudes or discrimination?

  • Have you or someone you know experienced gender-based discrimination?


5️⃣ Personal Reflection

  • In what ways do you feel influenced by traditional gender expectations?

  • Do you think strict gender roles are more harmful or beneficial for society?
