 Structure

1. Greeting

Use a friendly opening.

Examples:

  • Hi Alex,
  • Hey Sarah,
  • Dear Tom,

2. Opening / Reason for Writing

Say why you’re writing and show interest.

Useful phrases:

  • I’m writing to tell you about…
  • I just wanted to let you know that…
  • Thanks for your email. It was great to hear from you.
  • Sorry I haven’t written for a while, but…

3. Main Paragraph 1 – First Idea

Develop your first main point.

Linkers & phrases:

  • First of all,
  • To begin with,
  • One reason is that…
  • For example,
  • In my opinion,

4. Main Paragraph 2 – Second Idea

Add more information or another idea.

Connectors:

  • Also,
  • In addition,
  • Another thing is that…
  • What’s more,
  • As a result,

5. Optional Paragraph – Opinion / Suggestion

Give advice, suggest plans, or ask questions.

Useful phrases:

  • I think it would be a good idea to…
  • Why don’t we…?

  • Let me know what you think.

6. Closing

End in a friendly, natural way.

Examples:

  • Hope to hear from you soon.
  • Write back soon!
  • Take care,

7. Signing Off

Use your name.

Examples:

4.explain why you think she will enjoy it
