SPEAKING

MODERN ART

‘A modern artist is one who throws paint on a canvas, wipes it off with a cloth and sells the cloth’ (Anon.). This quotation ridicules modern art. Many people do so. Talk about your tastes and preferences in art, ranging from painting and sculpture to architecture and computer-generated art. Include, at least, two of the following points:

 · Modern art: art or nonsense?

 · Is a work of art to be assessed by how much money it reaches on auctions?

· What is your favourite artistic movement / painter / architect ... ?

 · Can modern art be appreciated without instruction?

NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS (NGOs)

NGOs have become part of the development process on many countries in recent decades. Unfortunately, some

of them have been recently in the news for all the wrong reasons. Ask for your partner’s opinion and discuss, at

least, two of the following points:

 Types and roles of NGOs

 Impact of NGOs in the development of third-world countries

 Why do people volunteer to work at an NGO?

 NGOs and corruption

Read the following suggestions and talk about at least two of them:
 How to be a good friend
 Is it better to have a lot of friends or a few very close friends?
 What would and wouldn’t you do for a friend?
 Which situations can affect friendship negatively?
