Read the following text, then answer the questions below by choosing the correct answer, a, b or c. Only ONE answer is correct. (10 marks)

Be a model of good health
We all want our children to eat healthily and be physically active. But are we doing everything we can to help them? Research has shown that parents are important role models when it comes to teaching children to be healthy. So remember that it has to start with you. What can you do to help your children establish healthy habits?
o    Make sure that you eat a balanced diet and do plenty of exercise yourself. It’s not enough just to tell your children to do so. Remember that they will follow your example.
o    Plan family meals carefully, and try to include lots of salads and vegetables with meals. Encourage everyone to drink milk or fruit juice instead of a coke. And don’t forget to end meals with some fruit. Children usually like fruit salad.
o    Eat breakfast, and make sure that your children do too. Breakfast gives your body energy for the day ahead. And studies show that children who eat breakfast do better in school.
o    Limit the time your family spends watching television to a couple of hours a day. Instead, get active as a family. Play a sport with your children. Go on long walks together at weekends. Spend lots of time outdoors.
o    Get your children’s teachers involved. Teachers are also important role models for young children. They can help by encouraging children to stay away from unhealthy snacks when they are at school and to make the right choices for healthy eating.

TRUE / FALSE: LOOK AT THE ARTICLE AND GUESS WHETHER THE SENTENCES ARE TRUE (T) OR
FALSE (F).
A hi-tech company in the U.K. has launched a text messaging service that automatically destroys emails
40 seconds after people open them. This should be popular with anyone who wants secrets to
stay secret. Subscribers have to download an application called StealthText to their mobile phone to
use the service. The software’s developer Staellium UK hopes its product will appeal to both
business people who deal with sensitive information and love cheats. A representative said the
company wants to give e-mail senders more control over the messages they send instead of trusting
recipients to delete them.
The technology looks like something from a 007 movie. Staellium CEO Carole Barnum said the new
service has “massive benefits for people from all walks of life”. She also said: “Ultimately, no one will
have to worry about their messages or pictures ending up in the wrong hands ever again.”
Staellium’s website suggests soccer superstar David Beckham might need SteathText. His friend
Rebecca Loos suspiciously failed to delete his embarrassing mails last year. StealthText messages are
not totally erased, but stay on a special computer. However, the recipient has no further access to
them after 40 seconds.

TASK 2

READ THE FOLLOWING LETTER AND CHOOSE THE CORRECT ANSWER FOR THE QUESTIONS:
To: The Manager of Mezzo Mash Restaurant
Dear Sir,
Last Tuesday evening I went with two friends to your restaurant for my 18th birthday. I’d
booked the table for eight o’clock and we arrived about ten minutes late, but that was not a
problem. The waiter, who was very polite, showed us to our table and we studied the menu. I
ordered a fish pie and my friends ordered some salads. However, after about fifteen minutes,
the waiter informed us that there was no more fish pie. He apologised and suggested ordering
something else. I looked at the menu again and decided to have the same as my friends – a
salad.
When the food came, it was very good. After we’d finished, we decided to order some
desserts. The waiter said that, unfortunately, it was too late. There wasn’t enough time for us
to order desserts. He said he was very sorry but our table was reserved by another group at
nine thirty and we would have to leave.
We paid the bill and left feeling very disappointed. It spoilt my birthday. Nobody told us when
we arrived that there was a time limit. It was very unsatisfactory and I doubt that we’ll go to
your restaurant again.
Yours faithfully,

Martin Cary

1B2 Reading about fortunetellers

Dear advanced students,
have a look at the key of the reading I asked you to do for homework last Thursday ( use your dictionaries to check the vocabulary exercise). I include the text for the students who didn´t come.

Read about fortunetellers.

Fortune telling is the practice of predicting the future, usually of an individual, through mystical or supernatural means. Common methods used in fortune telling include astrology, tarot card reading, crystallomancy (reading of a crystal sphere), and palmistry. Are you interested in having someone read your palm? Would you like to take your chances with tarot cards? Would you like to visit an old-fashioned Gypsy fortuneteller who looks into a crystal ball and sees everything?
There are many different forms of psychic art and different kinds of fortune telling methods. For example, palmistry is a method of interpreting the shape of the hand and the lines of the palm to determine your character and life experiences. One type of palmistry attempts to tell your future by reading the lines on the palm of your hand. Another type of palmistry tries to read the strengths and weaknesses of your personality from the shape of your hand. Other forms of fortune telling include the observation of the wind currents and cloud formation, interpreting the damage when a hatchet is smacked into a table, reading smoke, tea leaves or coffee grinds, reading the holes or mold in cheese, and even interpreting the lines in your belly button.
A psychic is someone who claims to have paranormal or supernatural powers that he or she uses to answer your questions or make observations about you. The psychic might simply look you over and start talking, or they may use props or aids such as tarot cards, astrological charts, your palm, or pieces of jewelry or metal that have been against your skin. Readings can focus on issues of the past, present or future and are offered in various degrees of detail and complexity.
Visiting a psychic can be a lot of fun. How much of it you take seriously is up to you. However, it can be interesting to hear what someone who doesn’t know you has to say about you and about your life. Most people who take psychics seriously often don’t use them for predicting the future, but use them as an aid in expanding the way they view themselves and / or their possibilities for the future. They see fortunetellers as advice or suggestion givers, rather than actually predicting what will happen in the future.
