TOURISM IS BIG BUSINES. HOWEVER, ARE THERE HIDDEN COSTS AND DOES TOURISM ALWAYS BENEFIT A COUNTRY?

Tourism is a big business in the world, in particular in Spain. People usually think that it always benefits a town or a country. But, is this real? Does tourism not have disadvantages?

First of all, if a country wants to attract tourists, the government has to build new roads, hospitals, telecommunication infrastructures, etc. and this is an important advantage since it produces an economic and social development. What is more, the main advantage of tourism industry is job creation. This is especially true when the unemployment rate is very high.

On the other hand, this development is the cause of a great environmental destruction. A lot of ancient forests, coasts, and other natural areas are destroyed. Furthermore, the jobs created are usually marginal and seasonal and people do not need to be highly qualified in order to work in tourism business, so a lot of young boys and girls leave the school.

In my opinion, tourism is a positive business for a country if the foreign money produces an economic growth with qualified jobs in other areas of the economic activity, if education improves and if there is an environmental protection.

Jorge González García.

Last year, 52 millions tourists visited our country and these figures have made Spain to be one of the most tourist places in the world. Tourism in Spain started to be a fashion in the sixties and currently Spanish economy depends strongly on tourism. However, tourism has advantages and disadvantages in the Spanish society.

The main advantage of tourism is the economical profit. People get a job easily when tourism is promoted in a village or town. Then, the rate of unemployment decreases considerably, which is a real benefit for the economy of a country like Spain. Moreover, tourism helps to develop the infrastructures of the country, e.g. better airports and connections are built, the road infrastructures and the railway network are improved, etc.

On the other hand, there are some disadvantages associated to tourism. The main one is the deterioration of tourist areas, especially some of them which are protected for any particular reasons; e.g., historical buildings or towns, natural reserves with endangered animal or plant species or simply beautiful landscapes in the cost. Another disadvantage is the quality of the jobs that are generally related to the tourism sector. They are mostly linked to services where formation is not usually required and the salaries are lower.

In conclusion, I think that tourism is important for the development of a country, especially in the economical aspects, though the authorities should avoid massive tourism which could finish with other alternatives of progress more sustainable in the long term.

JESÚS COLLAZOS

Did you know that about 3,000,000 workers work in hotels, restaurants and bars in our country? Big tourism companies have settled around Spain and some of them are settling abroad. Currently tourism produces 30 per cent of Spanish incomes, and Spain is visited each year by more than 50,000,000 foreign people. However, there are hidden costs and sometimes tourism does not benefit a country.

To begin with, Spanish coasts are crowded with buildings near the shore. Some of them were built in spite of the city planning rules and over landmarks which had special protection. Furthermore, tourists spend a lot of water and Spain has a dry weather specially in the coast. For example, a golf course uses as much water as one city of about 10,000 citizens. Rivers cannot provide enough water and it is necessary to build artesian wells. This action affects the environment and can dry water sources. Besides, in the Canary Islands big factories have been built to desalt sea water, which causes much pollution. Moreover, those factories are expensive to build and to work.

However, there is a tourism which has advantages and it is environmentally friendly and preserves the monuments. In addition, this kind of tourism which increases the cultural level of the tourists and it consists not only in lying on the beach , getting tanned , having beers at night and wasting water in pools . It is the tourism that our country has to promote. For instance, the old town of León needs special promotion in order that everybody knows the buildings and the history.

Taking all these things considered, tourism has a lot of benefits but also has drawbacks and not always is convenient for everybody. I believe that tourist hotels and buildings built contrary to city planning must be knocked down in order to preserve the environment.

ARTURO MORENO

Currently, many people spend their holidays and weekends doing tourism. Landscapes, monuments or beaches are the most important things to attract the tourist's  attention.
Firstly, more jobs are created in order to offer a good service to the customers. For instance, in Spain tourists can do "gastro-tourism", so a great number of employments are increased such as cooks, waiters, bus drivers or even shop assistants. What is more, the economy of a country gets increased because some tourists usually spend much money, like Germans who drink a lot of alcohol or the Russian who like buying jewelry or clothes and complements in fashion. Also, history and culture of the country are shown to the rst of the world through its monuments, museums or  citizens'  lifestyle.

On the other hand, not everything is good. A big disadvantage is the dirt and the noise levels that are produced by certain types of tourists, for exemple in the last years Spain is receiving a kind of tourism which is named "alcohol tourism" for young people mainly from France and England.   Besides, that type of tourism does not spend much money and usually break the urban furniture. So it represents a waste instead of a help to increase the benefits of the cities or the economy of a country.

In conclusion, tourism not always is a good form to obtain benefits for a town because sometimes they have to spend a great amount of money in order to maintain the cities cleaned, the beaches in perfect conditions or the mountain routes well marked.
