Tuesday 18th February: Masterclass at 18.00 p.m

Dear C1 evening students,
Next Tuesday, we´ll be attending a really interesting masterclass by Víctor, one of the English teachers of the EOI.

Mind the time and place: 18th February, 18.00 pm in the Events Room (ground floor).  We´ll meet there at 17.55 to get in the place together as a group.

We won´t have class afterwards as it´s going to last for almost 2 hours.
I´m sorry for any inconvenience the time may cause you but I really think it´s a great opportunity for everybody.

( No need to say that morning students are also really welcome, so meet us there).

HOW TO WRITE A PROPOSAL

A proposal is a formal document in which you "propose" or give ideas for a project. This kind of document is sent to a figure of authority, for example your boss or the senior president of a national committee, who is asking for your help  in the form of ideas (or proposals) to make the project successful.

EXAMPLES:
In the following piece of writing the director of The English Language Society has asked you to write a proposal on how to attract new members.

Notice that proposals have a title and subheadings (subtitles). There is an introduction and a conclusion as well.

Task 1: Proposal on how to attract members to the English language society.

Introduction

The aim of this proposal is to give recommendations on what new events to organise in order to attract more people to join our society. It also suggests varied ways in which we can make our current activities more appealing.

The current situation
There are a number of cultural activities that we offer in our society such as the book club, which meets on Saturday afternoons to discuss a classic book, and the cinema group, in which a black and white film is projected once a month. While both events have proved to be popular among older people, mainly middle-aged women, there are very few young people showing interest in participating. As a result of this, the society has failed to grow and in fact our statistics show that we are actually losing members little by little.

How to attract new members
I suggest that we create events aimed at people in their early and mid-twenties. For example we can organize pop concerts, inviting the local bands who perform English covers, or fan clubs, where members can meet to talk about their favourite British actors or actresses.
We should also try to attract more males to our society and one way to do this is through sport. I recommend forming a football or tennis club. We can get together to watch the EuroCup matches or the Wimbledon games and then talk about them.
Regarding our current events, the book club and the cinema group, I think we should keep them but I suggest discussing modern books and passing premier films from time to time to wider our range of participants.
Conclusion
There should be no delay in creating appealing activities to attract new members, such as the suggested pop concerts, fan clubs and sport groups. We should also maintain the book club and the cinema group, which have proved to be successful in the past, but including the discussion and projection of some modern books and films which may be interesting to young people.

Proposals: tips and samples

TASK 2:

There are plans to demolish an old and unused building in the town where you are a student. You feel that the building should be saved. You decide to write a proposal for the town council explaining why you think the building should be preserved, suggesting what could be done to modernise it and saying how the building could benefit the local people.

INTRODUCTION

In this proposal I aim to persuade the Council that Ducie Central is a landmark building, that its demolition is not in the public interest, and that the building could still have a bright future.

WHY DUCIE CENTRAL SHOULD BE PRESERVED

Ducie Central was the first adult education centre in the city, and it stood as a point of pride for hundreds of years before falling into neglect. Even today in its shabby, vandalised state, it is warmly regarded - many older people took classes there, and even some teenagers can remember the annual fun fair that was held on the grounds.
But the building is more than memories - it's a place where education used to happen, and where it can happen again.

HOW IT CAN BE MODERNISED

Ducie is old and would cost a fortune to heat. There's no doubt it would be expensive to insulate, install triple-glazed windows, and set up solar panels on the roofs. However, local architects and the Engineering College are willing to work on my proposed redevelopment for free.
I recommend that one section be converted into office space - that would help offset the cost of the project.

REDEVELOPMENT WOULD BENEFIT EVERYONE

It's not hard to see who would benefit from demolition - property developers who would buy the land cheaply and throw up some copy/paste housing. Modernising the building and re-opening the college would benefit not only the people who would study there but also the whole community. It would be a focal point and we could hold the fun fair like in the past.

CONCLUSION

I believe that modernising the building is the best choice and strongly urge you to consider it.

TASK 3
The director of the Official School of Languages where you are studying at the moment asks students for suggestions to improve the school and modernise its facilities to help current students and attract new ones.
You decide to write a proposal for him suggesting what could be done to modernise it and saying how the school could benefit the students-
