Grammar: putting adjectives in order
If you have a number of adjectives before a noun they have a tendency to come in the order:
(1) comparative / superlative (2) opinion (3) size / shape (4) age (5) colour (6) origin / nationality (7) material (8) type / purpose.
For example, the rarest collectable round ancient reddish North-American bronze incense-burning plate - not that you are ever likely to use all categories in one go!
- I love that really old big green antique car that always parked at the end of the street. [quality - age - size - color - proper adjective]
- My sister has a big, beautiful, tan and white, bulldog. [size - quality - color - color]
- A wonderful old Italian clock. [opinion - age - origin]
- A big square blue box. [dimension - shape - color]
- A disgusting pink plastic ornament. [opinion - color - material]
- Some slim new French trousers. [dimension - age - origin]
- A wonderful old Italian clock. [opinion - age - origin]
- I bought a pair of black leather shoes. [color - material]
